. showbiz / showbiz

showbiz

[
from The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black
Sparrow Press]

I can't have it
and you can't have it
and we won't
get it

so don't bet on it
or even think about
it

just get out of bed
each morning

wash
shave
clothe
yourself
and go out into
it

because
outside of that
all that's left is
suicide and
madness

so you just
can't
expect too much

you can't even
expect

so what you do
is
work from a modest
minimal
base

like when you
walk outside
be glad your car
might possibly
be there

and if it is---
that the tires
aren't
flat

then you get
in
and if it
starts---you
start.

and
it's the damndest
movie
you've ever
seen
because
you're
in it---

low budget
and
4 billion
critics

and the longest
run
you ever hope
for
is

one
day.

showbiz

[extraído do livro  The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black
Sparrow Press]

eu não aguento isto,
você não aguenta isto
e nós não vamos
compreender isto

então não aposte nisto
ou nem mesmo pense
nisto

simplesmente levante-se da cama
a cada manhã

lave-se
barbeie-se
vista-se
saia de casa
e aceite
isto

porque
fora isso
tudo o que resta é
suicídio e
loucura

então você simplesmente
não pode
ter muitas expectativas

você não pode nem
ter expectativas

então o que você faz
é
trabalhar a partir de uma modesta
remuneração
mínima

como quando
você sai
fique contente que seu carro
possivelmente
esteja lá

e se está---
fique contente pelos pneus
não estarem
furados

então você
entra
e se ele
dá a partida---você
dá a partida.

e
este é o filme
mais desgraçado
que você já
viu
porque
você está
nele---

cachê baixo
e
4 bilhões
de críticos

e o período mais longo
de exibição
que você já
desejou
é

um
dia.

. confession / confissão

confession

[from The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black Sparrow Press]

waiting for death
like a cat
that will jump on the
bed

I am so very sorry for
my wife

she will see this
stiff
white
body

shake it once, then
maybe
again:

"Hank!"

Hank won't
answer.

it's not my death that
worries me, it's my wife
left with this
pile of
nothing.

I want to
let her know
though
that all the nights
sleeping
beside her

even the useless
arguments
were things
ever splendid

and the hard
words
I ever feared to
say
can now be
said:

I love
you.

.

confissão

[extraído do livro The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black Sparrow Press]

aguardando a morte
como um gato
que saltará sobre a
cama

sinto tanto pela
minha mulher

ela verá este
corpo
branco
e rígido

chacoalhará uma vez, e
talvez
mais uma vez:

-Hank!

Hank não vai
responder.

não é minha morte que
me preocupa, é minha esposa
deixada com este
monte de
nada.

quero que
ela saiba
entretanto
que todas as noites
dormindo
ao seu lado

mesmo as discussões
inúteis
foram coisas
realmente esplêndidas

e as palavras
difíceis
que sempre tive medo de
dizer
agora podem ser
ditas:

eu te
amo.

. be kind / seja bondoso

be kind

[from The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black Sparrow Press]

we are always asked
to understand the other person's
viewpoint
no matter how
out-dated
foolish or
obnoxious.

one is asked
to view
their total error
their life-waste
with
kindliness,
especially if they are
aged.

but age is the total of
our doing.
they have aged
badly
because they have
lived
out of focus,
they have refused to
see.

not their fault?

whose fault?
mine?

I am asked to hide
my viewpoint
from them
for fear of their
fear.

age is no crime

but the shame
of a deliberately
wasted
life

among so many
deliberately
wasted
lives

is.

.

seja bondoso

[extraído do livro The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black Sparrow Press]

sempre nos pedem
para compreender o ponto de vista
do próximo
não importa quão
antiquado
tolo ou
obnóxio.

pedem para
enxergar
com
bondade
todos os seus erros
suas vidas desperdiçadas,
principalmente se eles são
velhos.

mas envelhecer é tudo que
nós fazemos.
eles envelheceram
mal
porque
viveram
fora de foco,
eles se recusaram
a entender.

não é culpa deles?

é culpa de quem?
minha?

me pedem para esconder
deles
meu ponto de vista
por medo de seus
medos.

envelhecer não é crime

mas a vergonha
de uma vida
deliberadamente
desperdiçada

entre tantas
vidas
deliberadamente
desperdiçadas

é.

. such luck / tanta sorte

such luck
[from The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992),
Black Sparrow Press]

we were at this table,
men and women,
after dinner.
somehow
the conversation got
around to
PMS.
one of the ladies
stated firmly that
the only cure for
PMS
was old
age.
there were other
remarks
that I have
forgotten,
except for one
which came from this
German guest
once married,
now divorced.
also, I had seen
him with
any number of
beautiful young
girlfriends.
anyhow, after quietly
listening
to our conversation
for some time
he asked us,
"what's PMS?"

now here was one
truly touched
by
the angels.

the light was so
bright
we
all looked
away.

.

tanta sorte

[extraído do livro The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black Sparrow Press]

estávamos em uma mesa,
homens e mulheres,
após o jantar.
de alguma maneira
a conversa girou
em torno da
TPM.
uma das senhoras
declarou com firmeza que
a única cura para
TPM
era a
velhice.
houveram outros
comentários
que eu
esqueci,
exceto por um
feito por
um convidado alemão
que já foi casado,
e agora é divorciado.
além disso, eu o vi
com
várias
garotas
jovens e bonitas.
de qualquer maneira, após ouvir
calmamente
nossa conversa
por algum tempo
ele nos perguntou,
“o que é TPM ?”

aqui estava alguém
verdadeiramente  tocado
pelos
anjos.

a luz era tão
brilhante
que todos nós
desviamos
o olhar.

. bluebird / pássaro azul

.

pássaro azul

[(Revista)Purr - No. 1 - 1975]

deseja sair
mas sou muito durão para ele,
eu digo,
fique escondido, você quer me
atrapalhar?
quer estragar os
trabalhos?
quer arruinar minhas vendas de livros na
Europa?

há um pássaro azul em meu coração que
deseja sair
mas eu sou muito esperto, só o deixo sair
algumas vezes à noite
quando todos estão adormecidos.
eu digo, eu sei que você está aí,
então não fique
triste.

então o coloco de volta,
mas ele está cantando um pouco
lá dentro, eu ainda não o deixei
morrer
e nós dormimos juntos desse
jeito
com nosso
pacto secreto
e é belo o bastante para
fazer um homem
chorar, mas eu não
choro, e
você?

. peace / paz

peace

[from The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black Sparrow Press]

near the corner table in the
cafe
a middle-aged couple
sit.
they have finished their
meal
and they are each drinking a
beer.
it is 9 in the evening.
she is smoking a
cigarette.
then he says something.
she nods.
then she speaks.
he grins, moves his
hand.
then they are
quiet.
through the blinds next to
their table
flashing red neon
blinks on and
off.

there is no war.
there is no hell.

then he raises his beer
bottle.
it is green.
he lifts it to his lips,
tilts it.

it is a coronet.

her right elbow is
on the table
and in her hand
she holds the
cigarette
between her thumb and
forefinger
and
as she watches
him
the streets outside
flower
in the
night.

.

paz

[from The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black Sparrow Press]

próximo à mesa de canto no
restaurante
está sentado
um casal de meia idade.
eles terminaram suas
refeições
e estão bebendo uma cerveja
cada um.
são 9 horas da noite.
ela está fumando um
cigarro.
então ele diz alguma coisa.
ela assente com a cabeça.
então ela fala.
ele sorri, move sua
mão.
então eles ficam em
silêncio.
através da persiana próximo à
mesa deles
um neon vermelho reluzente
está
piscando.

não há guerra.
não há inferno.

então ele levanta sua garrafa de
cerveja.
ela é verde.
a leva até seus lábios,
e vira.

é como um troféu.

o cotovelo direito dela está
na mesa
e em sua mão
segura o
cigarro
entre o polegar e o
indicador
e
enquanto o
observa
as ruas lá fora
florescem
na
noite.

. death is smoking my cigars / a morte está fumando meus charutos

death is smoking my cigars

[from The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black Sparrow Press]

you know: I'm drunk once again
here
listening to Tchaikovsky
on the radio.
Jesus, I heard him 47 years
ago
when I was a starving writer
and here he is
again
and now I am a minor success as
a writer
and death is walking
up and down
this room
smoking my cigars
taking hits of my
wine
as Tchaik is working away
at the Pathétique,
it's been some journey
and any luck I've had was
because I rolled the dice
right:
I starved for my art, I starved to
gain 5 god-damned minutes, 5 hours,
5 days---
I just wanted to get the word
down;
fame, money, didn't matter:
I wanted the word down
and they wanted me at a punch press,
a factory assembly line
they wanted me to be a stock boy in a
department store.

well, death says, as he walks by,
I'm going to get you anyhow
no matter what you've been:
writer, cab-driver, pimp, butcher,
sky-diver, I'm going to get
you ...

o.k. baby, I tell him.

we drink together now
as one a.m. slides to 2
a.m. and
only he knows the
moment, but I worked a con
on him: I got my
5 god-damned minutes
and much
more.

.

a morte está fumando meus charutos

[extraído do livro The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), Black Sparrow Press]

sabe como é: estou aqui mais uma vez
bêbado
ouvindo Tchaikovsky
no rádio.
Jesus, eu o ouvi há 47 anos
atrás
quando eu era um escritor que passava fome
e aqui está ele
novamente
e agora faço um pouco de sucesso como
escritor
e a morte está andando
para cima e para baixo
neste quarto
fumando meus charutos
tomando tragos do meu
vinho
enquanto Tchaik toca ininterruptamente
a Pathétique,
tem sido uma jornada e tanto
e qualquer sorte que tive foi
porque rolei o dado
direito:
passei fome pela minha arte, passei fome para
ganhar malditos 5 minutos, 5 horas,
5 dias---
eu só queria
escrever;
fama, dinheiro, não importava:
eu queria escrever
e eles me queriam em uma puncionadeira,
na linha de montagem de uma fábrica
queriam que eu trabalhasse no estoque em uma
loja de departamentos.

bem, diz a morte, enquanto caminha,
eu vou te pegar de qualquer maneira
não importa o que você tenha sido:
escritor, motorista de táxi, cafetão,açougueiro,
pára-quedista, eu vou te
pegar...

tudo bem querida, digo a ela.

nós bebemos juntos agora
enquanto uma da manhã transforma-se em
duas da manhã e
somente ela sabe o
momento, mas eu a
trapaceei: consegui meus
malditos 5 minutos
e muito
mais.
